Why Choose Rolled Rings
At CanForge, we produce a wide variety of high-quality forgings for a whole host of demanding and sophisticated engineering applications. In fact, our Open Die plant is one of North America’s premier facilities for the manufacture of seamless rolled rings. Our incredibly versatile seamless rolled rings are used in countless applications, from nuclear reactors and airplane engines to off-road equipment and military vehicles. And for good reason...
In today’s blog, we’ll be discussing the many functions of rolled rings, how they’re manufactured and why CanForge’s seamless rolled rings always come out on top.
Seamless Rolled Rings and Their Many Applications
Seamless rolled rings can be found just about anywhere. The gears of your car, the motor of your washing machine – you name it! To demonstrate just how multifaceted these forged components are, let’s take a look at some of the ways they’re used.
Rolled Rings and the Aerospace Industry
The aerospace industry has a lot of standards that have to be met. The industry is also under constant stress from frequent air pressure changes. As a result, they must be able to handle mass amounts of physical stress. Fortunately, our forged seamless rolled rings allow for just that. CanForge provides the aerospace industry with forged rings that provide the best level of performance for both commercial and military aircraft. Our seamless rolled rings can be seen in jet engines, helicopter rotor assemblies, and spacecraft. Made from numerous non-ferrous, ferrous, and special alloy metals, our forged rolled rings provide greater strength than weldments, castings, or flame-cut plates. Their structural dependability and high strength-to-weight ratio greatly benefit the range and performance of this industry.
Rolled Rings and the Transportation Industry
All vehicles require strong parts like our forged seamless rolled rings to maintain their durability, reliability, and resistance to corrosion, no matter where they’re operated. Our seamless rolled rings provide a variety of transportation industries with the strength required to endure many different environments, which can often be a challenge to meet. In the automotive industry, for example, our forged seamless rolled rings are used in almost every major structural or high-load component found in trucks and automobiles. Crankshafts, clutches, braking systems, gears and couplings are just a few of the ways CanForge’s superior rolled rings are used.
Rolled Rings and the Oil & Gas Industry
Forged machinery used in the oil and gas industry is known to withstand some of the harshest and most demanding environments. That’s why it’s important to have parts that can resist corrosion and cavitation while meeting strict offshore gas and oil drilling requirements. And our seamless rolled rings fit the bill. Our resilient seamless rolled rings play a vital role in this industry as they are able to withstand high temperatures, pressure, and corrosive substances. Often used as pipe connectors or different types of flanges and pressure vessel connection pipelines, our forged rolled rings help ensure that machinery used in this industry lasts for the years to come.
Rolled Ring Forging Method
Seamless rolled rings are often produced using a forging process known as ring rolling on rolling mills. These mills vary in size to produce rings with outside diameters ranging from just a few inches to over 300 inches and in weights from a single pound to over 300,000 pounds. The forging process begins by forging a circular preform of metal to achieve structural integrity and directional grain flow using our open die process. The workpiece is then pierced with a hole. This creates a hollow “doughnut” that is heated and placed onto a ring mill to be worked. Once on the ring mill, the idler roll applies pressure to the preform against the drive roll. Ring diameters are increased as the continuous pressure reduces the wall thickness. As the ring is rolled, the axial rolls control the height of the ring. This process continues until the desired size is achieved. The result is a forged seamless rolled ring that maintains strength and durability even in the most demanding environments.
Advantages of the Rolled Ring Forging Process
Cost-Effective
Compared to other methods, the rolled ring forging process requires far less machining, which means there is little to no waste of raw materials, allowing us to keep our production costs low. For example, machining requires materials to be cut into specific shapes, which is time-consuming and expensive. Rolled ring forging, on the other hand, allows you to create complex shapes without having to carve them out of a solid piece of metal.
Difficulty and Strength
Don’t let the cost-effectiveness of rolled rings fool you into thinking they aren’t as strong. CanForge’s rolled rings demonstrate exceptional quality and strength. When you machine a part out of a solid piece of metal, it loses much of its toughness. But thanks to the rolled ring forging process, which doesn’t require nearly as much machining as other methods, our seamless rolled rings are able to demonstrate incomparable strength. No matter the application, you can rely on our seamless rolled rings to hold up under pressure.
