Spotlight on the Aerospace Industry

Human beings have always been fascinated by the mysteries of the universe. In the second half of 20th century, the prospect of space travel, a feat unimaginable to previous generations, became a viable option for states with the resources to fund and execute ambitious excursions into the cosmos.

At the same time, great strides were also being made on Earth. By the 1930s, jet aircraft technology was being slowly refined, and within a single generation, the aspiration to transport massive quantities of people and goods at record speeds and altitudes around the globe was fully realized thanks to the intelligence and persistence of the budding aerospace industry.

Today, the global aerospace and defense (A&D) industry is massive. In Canada alone, the industry contributed $25 billion (CAD) to the national GDP and accounts for more than 213,000 jobs across the country. Manufacturing accounts for close to 70% of the industry’s activity, while the remainder is focused on maintenance, repair, and overhaul. As you might expect, these numbers are much higher in the United States.

With private investment in space travel surging despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, it appears that the aerospace industry is poised to continue growing over the next decade—and we are waiting in the wings, ready to contribute value to these expansive and vitally important efforts.

For years, CanForge has supplied the commercial and military aerospace industries with quality, high-performance forgings that remain strong and resilient under the most corrosive conditions. Our forgings, crafted from ferrous, non-ferrous, and special alloy metals, have been used in blades, hinges, landing gear cylinders, and other applications on helicopters, military aircrafts, jets, and spacecrafts.

Metals described as non-ferrous metals are those which have elements other than iron as their base. While non-ferrous metals tend to be more expensive than ferrous metals, certain properties make them preferential in certain applications—they are lightweight, malleable, ductile, and resistant to corrosion. Meanwhile, some materials like aluminum can have their tensile strengths nearly doubled by rolling or other cold working processes.

CanForge currently supplies forgings for:

  • Shafts
  • Gear Blanks
  • Shrouds
  • Stator Cases
  • Turbine Disks
  • Bearing Housings
  • Tail Hooks

Manufacturing a safe, high-quality product has always been our number one priority at CanForge. Our forgings are produced according to industry specifications and manufactured to the design parameters of our customers. To learn more about our quality certifications, visit our website here.

As the A&D industry continues to advance in the coming decades, it is clear that new challenges will demand new forms of creativity and innovation, as well as lighter, stronger, and more heat-resistant forgings that can endure in a range of inter- and extra-planetary conditions.

At CanForge, we have always been quick to respond to market conditions, expanding our sizeable repertoire of skills by integrating new, cutting-edge technologies and techniques. Continually evolving with our customers provides us with new opportunities to demonstrate our commitment to providing quality products that meet and exceed the expectations of our clients.
